Building Alliances (Lecture 4 in the Production Studies: Work in Progress series at Central St. Martins)

Building Alliances

Thursday 3 November, 2022
6:30-8 pm
LVMH E002 Theatre
Central Saint Martins

Organised labour and opportunities for alliances between architectural and building workers

·       Alex Wood (USA) – Columbia University.

·       Aska Welford (TBC-UK) – UVW-SAW.

·       Charlie Edmonds – Future Architects Front

·       Peggy Deamer (USA) – The Architecture Lobby (remote)

·       Tilo Amhoff (UK) – University of Brighton, chair

Returning to Sérgio Ferro’s injunction to draw on what is available to us today in the field of building and his demonstrations of the many techniques and technologies capitalism mobilises to deskill and break apart co-operation on the building site we turn to the recent formation of architectural unions and to histories of organised labour in the building industry.

We ask academics and contemporary union organisers to what extent these developments can forge new alliances across the building site / design divide to make visible and advocate for the safety and rights of construction workers?
